If you want to have a good credit score, you need to be very decisive and flexible at all times. Not everybody knows how to maintain their large credit lines after all, as there would always be somebody who incurs bad debts and, consequently bad credit as a result of irresponsible spending and paying habits.
If you are in the process of applying for a credit card, you must ensure that the information that the consumer reporting company processes is in no uncertain terms correct. If there are any disputes, you must be sure to ask them to include copies of the documents that can support your position.
While you obviously would want to include your complete name and address, among other pieces of information, you must also be very, VERY specific when describing the information relating to the items that are disputed. You must state the facts and explain why you have disputed the information. It is of course important that you specify you want such information purged from your record.
It is also advisable to enclose a copy of the disputed credit report as additional evidence. So many of us neglect to keep the return receipt, but this piece of confirmation signifies that the consumer reporting agency has received the documents requested via certified mail and is ready to review your case. In addition, it is imperative that along with the enclosures, copies of your dispute letter must be kept.
It normally does not take more than a month for the consumer reporting agencies to investigate the disputed items, but much sooner than that if the dispute is considered to be nugatory or of little merit. If you make a request, the consumer reporting company should send notices of some corrections to anyone who has received the report in the past six months.
You must tell the creditor or the one who provided the information that you are disputing an item. Make sure that you include copies of documents that give support to your position. Most credit card providers would have a specific mailing address for disputes. A copy of your dispute has to be included by the credit card company when making correspondence with the consumer reporting company. In essence, the information provider will be required to “forget” such an incident happened, or condone it, if it is indeed proven through your dispute that you had every right to question the inaccurate information.
Your credit report, let it be known, is not an exact facsimile of your 100% complete credit history, as not all of the retail stores or financial institutions where you have credit card accounts may not be included. Some that are not included are those from the local retailers, gasoline card companies and credit unions.
If you are wanting to go beyond the standard credit card application and open your own credit line, you must have a certain degree of familiarity with the various tips and tricks to improve your credit rating. The process of maintaining good credit is, as the old adage goes, easier said than done, but the sacrifice in gleaning information and understanding it would be all worth your while if you know how to monitor your overall credit line.
