Used car dealerships have been the subject of many a joke throughout the years and are stereotypically portrayed as con artists looking to unload a pile of junk on anyone that will take it. Complaints from buyers for this very reason are very high.

The best thing you can do to avoid being caught up in a scam like this is to get in writing anything the dealer promises you during the sales process. Never sign any type of purchase agreement unless it has everything stated clearly in it that the dealer has offered you. Car salesman are good at their jobs, you just can’t get suckered in to the hype.

Financing seems to be the main concern that gets the most complaints. However, it isn’t always the entire fault of the dealership. Used cars are known to have higher interest rates simply because they are more often defaulted on payment than new cars are. This can be directly traced back to the way business used to be conducted. A person would purchase a car from a dealer that was essentially junk. Once the car broke down they would just stop paying on it all together. While the cars available on these lots are a lot different now, the financing is still done the same way.

Dealerships will buy and sell such a large volume of vehicles each week that it is almost impossible for them to personally know all the little pieces of information there is about each car on the lot. The fact that when the dealership buys these vehicles for resale they rarely include any type of paperwork doesn’t help this matter either.

Doing your own research is the best thing to do really. Vehicle reports can often provide you with the information you need to make a decision about whether or not you want to purchase a specific vehicle. You can ask the dealer for a copy of the report or bring along your cell phone to look the information up yourself.

When it comes time to conduct a test drive spend an adequate amount of time doing so. If there is any way at all that you can get a mechanic to look the vehicle over for you then you should have that done as well. In this industry rolling back odometers so they appear to have lower mileage happens a lot more than you might think.

You really only need your common sense when shopping for a used car. If something doesn’t sound or feel right, don’t agree to the purchase. Take the time to really check out the vehicle to you know for certain you are getting your moneys worth.
